Ray's Music

I have been playing music all my life.  Starting out in Chicago blues bands that I formed as early as six years old!  I was a bass player in many of the "British blues boom" bands out of England in the sixties and early seventies, traveling from gig to gig in an old box van, sleeping on the equipment in the back and eating in the greasy cafes on Britain's motorway system.

My musical horizons really opened up for me in my late teens when I discovered a whole universe of different musical styles, encompassing classical, rock, jazz, folk and ethnic musics.  It was in the 1975 that the turning point came.  I was on vacation in Brittany (which is just across the channel from my homeland of Britain) where I attended a Fest Noz or Night Festival.  The music of the biniou (Breton bagpipe) and bombard (Breton oboe) "hit me in the gut."  It was an incredibly powerful and life changing sound!  When I got home, I sought out all that I could find about Breton dance music and bought my first bagpipe during a performance trip to Bulgaria - an 'inside out' goat called a gaida.  I visited Brittany whenever I could manage it and became quite skilled in performing the music of dance of that quirky little Celtic country.

The next pivitol discovery was the country dances of central France.  The sound of the vielle à roue or hurdy gurdy paired with the cornemuse or French bagpipe set me off on another voyage of discovery.  After many years of travel and study in both Brittany and France, including a small detour into French medieval music down in the foothills of the Pyrenees, I am in a place where I can offer both the fascinating music and dance of these areas of the world.  As if these studies weren't enough, I also immersed myself into the world of Sacred Circle Dance during the same time period and I became one of the pioneering teacher/musicians in that movement.

So, here we are, up-to-date in 2010.  I now live in Providence, Rhode Island in a beautifully restored industrial mill.  From my home base I offer a whole myriad of musical and dance styles.  If your interests are as a participant or promoter of events that include Breton music/dance, French country music/dance, Sacred Circle Dance/music, my own compositions and choreographies or Celtic rock, then contact me.  I am available either solo or with my ensembles Trouz Bras, Triple Spiral or Caliburn.

Listen to examples of the various styles that I perform using the music player on the right , watch the video of my composition "Love Changes Everything" below and support "real" music by buying recordings in my store - and THANKS!
